Hackathons: Innovation and collaboration - ReMeP

In the last few years, hackathons have established themselves as an effective method for developing innovative solutions to complex problems. Originating in software development, they are now used in many different industries - from public administration to the legal sector. But what exactly is a hackathon, how does it work and who can take part?

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a time-limited event which brings together teams from different disciplines to develop creative solutions for addressing specific challenges. The word is made up of ‘hack’ (in the sense of creative problem solving) and ‘marathon’ (an intensive work process). The aim is to develop prototypes, concepts or functioning software solutions in a short period of time.

Hackathon: Typical execution

Hackathons usually last between 24 and 48 hours, but there are also longer formats with several weeks of preparation time. The process usually follows a fixed pattern:

  1. Kick-off & topic presentation - The organisers present the problems to be worked on.
  2. Team formation - Participants with different areas of expertise form teams.
  3. Working phase - The teams develop solutions, programme, test and fine-tune their ideas.
  4. Mentoring & support - Experienced experts support the teams with valuable feedback.
  5. Presentation & Evaluation - The teams present their results to a jury or the audience.
  6. Award for the best projects - The best ideas or prototypes are honoured.

Hackathons: Who participates?

A hackathon thrives on the diversity of its participants. The following groups, among others, are represented:

  • Software developers & data scientists - They implement the technical solutions.
  • Lawyers & experts from the respective industry - They provide the necessary domain knowledge.
  • Designers & UX experts - They take care of the user-friendliness.
  • Product managers & business developers - They contribute economic and strategic perspectives.

Representatives from companies, public administrations or research institutions who are looking for new ideas or want to test innovative solutions often also take part.
